Summary: Economic diversification has long preoccupied policymakers in western Canada. Since the economic downturn in the early-to-mid 1980s, a considerable amount of ink has been spilled on the subject of how western Canada has all its eggs in a single basket and needs to diversify beyond its resource base. In 1987, the federal government created a new department, Western Economic Diversification Canada, specifically mandated with that task.
